Where to set them
Claude Desktop → Settings → Preferences. Claude Code reads from ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md or project CLAUDE.md.
What to set
Tone (terse / prose-first), style (code-first / spec-format), output (table / prose / markdown), error handling (always show / only on request).
Per-role defaults
Dev: terse, code-first, include error handling. BA: prose-first, spec-format, acceptance criteria. Data: tables, SQL-first, edge cases. UX: research-synthesis, persona-format, journey-map.
